The Sound of Love
(to Sue)
When you asked me for a massage
and I circled your body with my palms
my tender hands liberated milk of love
as they pulled the cords of your heart.
When you asked me to look away
and I looked rather into the mirror
your reflection was a wave of love
that rebounds and envelops us two.
When you asked not to be touched
and I let the space between us stay
this space bound us with radiation
for in space this invisible love radiates.
When you asked me not to look at your face
and I peeped rather into your heart
in the stillness of your heart was peace
from this peace the melodious sound of love.
A battle with love
This morning the cock crew at dawn
and the clock alarm chimed
to herald another day
the birth of not just another day
but one marked ‘D-day’ in my diary.
I woke, rolling from one bedside to another
enthusiastic yet battling reluctance
my pulse raced, my heart went arrhythmic
several tens above the norms
i could hear a still voice asking
what are you doing: eh mm aa rr…, it stammered.
In a serene bathroom the eerie voice
drowned the stammering voice, counselling
say yes, your parents did and they’re better-off
say yes, and put the mark of a man in you
say yes, and activate the yam between your legs
say yes, and cultivate your ancestral seeds
it churned several yeses than I ‘ve ever heard
the more yeses the reverse my arrhythmia
then chanted I alongside, yes, yes, yes… and on and on.
Until we appeared before the world
sitting still, she and I, before the eyes of the world
we exchanged words, kisses and rings
from the applause an enveloping dew
when the lady asked us to sign, what do I sign? I asked
on the dotted lines, she replied dotting a smile
i put the dots in my name on the dotted lines
like a frozen fish she signed looking me in the eyes.
That dot in my life is a plus to my generation
because my ancestors will rejoice in admiration
praying that our benediction be blessed with fertilisation
for hunger with hope is a blessed cultivation
never shall it yield starvation.
Aba n’anya*
As she strode past the street
souls, bold and shy, watched endlessly
from key-holes, balconies and ataxic taxis
all marvelled at her elegant and gazelle legs.
As she crossed over the street
traffic lights paused to admire her face
faces shone with envy like laser beams
when lover-boy and lover-girl taxied off.
Back home, the cuddles, then the revelations
balding hairs strengthened by wigs
flabby breasts standing on enhancers
ugly face hidden behind make-ups
and long nails created with acrylic claws.
This damsel contrasts our thoughts
just as all that glitters is not gold
the way they look they never are
for real, this damsel is Aba n’anya.

Emeka Azuine graduated with honours in Mass communications from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and won the university’s Alhaji Babatunde Jose award for excellence in writing. He

Our love is free
Our love is love
It is like the air we breathe
Yet our love is free
Our love has no barriers
Our love know no boundaries
Our love has no walls
Neither does it have gates to lock us
Our love is limitless
As it is just infinite
It interposes the cardinal points
As our love abound in us
My love and yours are one
It is the only equation that gives one
We cannot be two to be so in love
And this is why we are one in love
I love you to infinity
I love you in ecstasy
I love you with joy
As your love makes me happy
VALENTINES LOVE
Everybody is making love
And nobody loves
As they have changed the rationale
Now make it an event of lovemaking
Everybody is plugging the socket
And nobody wants to know if there is current
For all they want is the action
As it fulfills creation
It is no longer love
It is now fulfilling an act
Because everybody is in the act
And we call it valentine love
LOVE IN YOUR BODY
I look into your eyes
And I see glittering love
The true love for me
As your eyes radiates love
I look at your lips
And I see kisses
As your lips wet with love
Seeking to be consumed in love
I look at your chest
And I see the nipples stand erect
Waiting to be loved
And consumed like an apple of fruit
I look at your hips
The rotation call for love
As it carries your beauty before me
Waiting to be carried with both hands
I feel the heat of your oven
Dripping the oil of life
As it wets your flowery roses
Waiting to be plucked for life
BE MY VALENTINE
I have thought of you everyday
I have remained awake each day
Just thinking about you
Please be my valentine -my lover
I go to bed thinking of you
I sleep with you in my dreams
As the day is only complete with you
And life will be full of joy with you
I ask for nothing more
Neither does I ask for anything less
But your pure love do I seek
As without it I am sick
I seek your love
The love that germinates from the heart
Meant for you and me
And that is why I ask for your love
MY VALENTINE
People celebrate lover's day
But I celebrate your love with love
For a day does not capture enough of my love
For your love is everyday
People earmark a day for love
I devote my life for your love
Your love is celebrated for life
As all my days are days of love
Though we celebrate with all lovers
It is only to inform the world we are true lovers
For my life is set aside for your love
So you are my eternal flame of love
You are my lover
Not just for the valentine
